In an era where the battlefield has expanded into the digital sphere, journalists in MENA conflict zones face unprecedented threats to their safety, integrity and ability to report. The panel brings together frontline reporters and media leaders to explain how journalists in these conflicts are reporting the wars they are living. From Gaza’s targeted media infrastructure, smearing journalists and killing them to the silencing of journalists in Sudan and Yemen, the panel will explore the evolving landscape of conflict reporting—where surveillance drones, cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns have become new weapons of war and how local and international journalists, if allowed in, navigate these perils, document atrocities in real time and forge cross-border collaborations to keep the truth alive. What are the personal and collective costs of this work? How do journalists preserve credibility and safety when truth itself is under siege?
Moderated by Sara Qudah.

Wael Al-Dahdouh

Wael Al-Dahdouh is bureau chief in Gaza for Al Jazeera. He has covered Gaza for almost 30 years. Numerous members of Al-Dahdouh's family have been killed by the Israeli military during the latest Gaza war. His wife, seven-year-old daughter, and 15-year-old son were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp on 28 October 2023, in addition to eight of his other relatives. On 15 December 2023, while Al-Dahdouh and his cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa were covering the Haifa School airstrike in Khan Yunis, they were hit by an Israeli missile, injuring Dahdouh and fatally wounding Abu Daqqa. Despite the death of many family members and his injury, he quickly returned to reporting on the war after both incidents. His son, journalist Hamza Al-Dahdouh, was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Khan Yunis on 7 January 2024 and two of his nephews were killed in an airstrike the following day. In November 2024, the National Press Club in Washington D.C. gave him the 2024 John Aubuchon International Press Freedom Award, the highest honor from the National Press Club. He has also received many other awards, including from Reporters Without Borders and Amnesty International. For more detailed information on Al-Dahdouh, here is the 31 October 2024 long read by Nesrine Malik in The Guardian.
