Artificial intelligence (AI) is being rapidly integrated across society in ways that deeply impact people and the planet. The AI industry advances a narrative that every sector is behind in adopting these technologies and must speed up adoption in a way that conforms with their vision of the future. As AI appears in more areas of daily life, including high stakes areas, journalists across many different beats have an important opportunity to examine this transformation in a way that informs public understanding and holds power to account. While AI promises benefits, journalists must look beyond the hype and scrutinize its development, deployment, and consequences. This panel will explore approaches to covering AI across different issue areas and highlight lessons from journalists and other experts doing this work.

Abeba Birhane
Abeba Birhane is a cognitive scientist researching AI accountability. This ranges from systematic examination of the AI ecology and governance structures to execution of algorithmic audits. Central to her research is challenging and dismantling societal and historical inequalities and power asymmetries, holding responsible bodies accountable and paving the way for a future marked by just and equitable AI systems that work for all. Abeba recently finished her PhD, where she explored the challenges and pitfalls of automating human behaviour through critical examination of existing computational models and audits of large scale datasets. Her thesis is here. She is the founder and principal investigator of the AI Accountability Lab housed at the School of Computer Science and Statistics in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
Garance Burke
Garance Burke is a global investigative journalist with The Associated Press leading a team examining the impacts of artificial intelligence technologies on our communities. Her public interest journalism has prompted federal investigations, cabinet-level resignations and congressional hearings. Burke’s stories on the treatment of migrant children on the US-Mexico border were a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2019 and the subject of an Emmy-winning documentary film partnership between AP and FRONTLINE PBS. Burke was an inaugural 2020 John S. Knight Journalism-Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Fellow at Stanford University, where she researched the role algorithms play in government decision-making. That year she co-founded an open-source project probing the use of surveillance and predictive tools amid the pandemic that won the Society of Professional Journalist’s Sunshine Award. Based in San Francisco, Burke previously served as AP’s Western data editor, collaborating with colleagues to shape accountability reporting. Her work has received accolades including the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, SPJ's Sigma Delta Chi national investigative reporting award and a national Edward R. Murrow award. Burke began her career at the Mexican financial daily El Financiero, then worked as a staff reporter for The Washington Post in Mexico City. She earned dual master's degrees from UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy and Graduate School of Journalism, where she taught basic data journalism.
Tatiana Dias
Tatiana Dias is a Brazilian investigative journalist specializing in technopolitics and human rights. She holds a degree in journalism from Faculdade Cásper Líbero and is a master's student in Communication Sciences at the University of São Paulo. In 2023-24, she was a Pulitzer Center AI Accountability Fellow, where she conducted the investigation The Factory Floor of AI on labor rights violations in the AI industry. As executive editor of the independent investigative outlet Intercept Brasil, she coordinated major coverage in technology, lobbying, surveillance, politics, and human rights. She won the 36th Human Rights Journalism Award in the digital category, was a Gabo Award finalist in 2023, and was nominated for the One Media Award in the environmental impact category in 2020. As a reporter and editor, she has over 19 years of experience in Brazilian newsrooms — including IstoÉ, Estadão, Galileu, HuffPost, and Nexo.
Eric Sears
Eric Sears is the Director of Technology in the Public Interest at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, where he leads grantmaking addressing the social implications of artificial intelligence by supporting interdisciplinary research, policy, and advocacy. Before launching this program, he managed MacArthur's human rights and technology portfolio. He previously held roles at Human Rights First and Amnesty International USA, where he managed an initiative focused on counterterrorism policy and human rights. He is founding Vice Chair of the Partnership on AI.
