Vertical video has helped Dave Jorgenson, Tara Palmeri and Sophia Smith Galer launch their own independent content beyond the remit of traditional newsrooms. But as more newsrooms are deploying their journalists to front explainer videos, Head of Product at Chora & Will Media Francesco Zaffarano asks these three TikTok trailblazers: what comes next? How and why should journalists continue to explore the format in an increasingly saturated space - and who manages to actually make it sustainable?

Dave Jorgenson

In May 2019, Dave Jorgenson launched the @WashingtonPost TikTok. The channel found immediate success on TikTok and in the D.C. Twittersphere. Over six years, it grew to become the Washington Post Universe, with 1.9 million followers on TikTok and 680K on YouTube Shorts. He won eight Webby Awards for his work, including ‘Best Creator’ multiple times. He also wrote a book, Make A TikTok Every Day. In July 2025, he left the Washington Post, along with two fellow colleagues, to launch Local News International. He is now overseeing a rapidly growing audience on his own accounts on TikTok and YouTube, as well as a quickly growing newsletter that predominantly reaches young men who tell Dave that they don’t interact with the news in other ways. The New York Times wrote about his ambitions to grow a young, engaged audience through LNI Media. He’s also spoken with Kara Swisher on her podcast, and with Scott Simon on NPR’s Weekend Edition.

Tara Palmeri

Tara Palmeri is one of the most feared and fearless reporters covering power and politics. She has 15 years of experience covering national politics and foreign affairs. She was formerly a White House Correspondent for ABC News where she covered the first Trump administration. She was the chief National Correspondent for POLITICO during the Biden administration. She has been a political analyst for CNBC, CBS and CNN. She started her career as a columnist for the Washington Examiner and then went on to report for the New York Post. She was a foreign correspondent for POLITICO Europe, where she covered international affairs, including Brexit. She hosted the Ringer's political podcast Somebody's Gotta Win and wrote a column for Puck. Tara also hosted two acclaimed podcasts on Jeffrey Epstein, Broken: Jeffrey Epstein and Power: The Maxwells. Tara currently hosts The Tara Palmeri Show and writes The Red Letter newsletter.

Sophia Smith Galer

Sophia Smith Galer is a journalist, author and content creator based in London. She is the co-host of the BBC World Service's Where To Be A Woman podcast and is a pioneer of TikTok journalism, winning the British Journalism Award for Innovation of the Year in 2021 as well as spots on the Forbes Under 30 and British Vogue's 25 Most Influential UK Women lists in 2022. She has more than 140 million TikTok views and a combined following of 700,000 followers between TikTok and Instagram. She is now freelance following working as a reporter for VICE News and the BBC.
