Amid the regional war in the Middle East, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has intensified his long-running domestic campaign against the country’s remaining democratic institutions - most notably, the media. One of his most recent clampdowns targeted Haaretz, a newspaper renowned for its critical coverage of the government.
Noa Landau, Haaretz’s deputy editor-in-chief, recounts the story of a leader so fixated on his own media portrayal that he continued his assault on independent journalism even after that obsession landed him in court and examines how this trend is reshaping, and endangering, local journalism in Israel.
