Journalists, editors, and news managers are encouraged to round off the day with this 90-minute, hands-on workshop providing tools and techniques to strengthen psychological safety and build resilience. Guided by proven techniques for understanding and talking about emotional wellbeing, participants will learn evidence-based strategies for self-care to help prepare for and manage exposure to traumatic stress, graphic content, situations of anxiety and burnout, and assignments that may be emotionally difficult.
Kindly note that the Centro Alessi has two entrances, one in Via Mazzini and one in Via Danzetta (parallel streets). The entrance for this workshop is in Via Mazzini.
This workshop forms part of the 3-day festival Safety Hub situated in the Centro Alessi.

Luisa Ortiz Perez

Luisa Ortiz Pérez leads the The Media Resilience Network and is the Executive Director of Vita-Activa.org, a helpline for journalists and freedom of expression defenders. A creative strategist with over 20 years of experience in mental health, digital rights, and care in media, she is the author of A Human Condition, a play about journalism and a 2022-23 JSK Journalism Fellow at Stanford University. She leads inclusive, high-impact global initiatives at the intersection of media, design, and the arts.

Gavin Rees
Gavin Rees

Gavin Rees is Senior Advisor for Training and Innovation at the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma. an organisation dedicated to promoting ethical approaches to the coverage of trauma and violence. Gavin has been working since 2008 as a trainer and consultant to news organisations, film production companies and media support organisations in more than 25 countries. His work has a particular focus on deepening journalists' capacity to cover challenging human rights abuses. With a prior background in documentary filmmaking and broadcast journalism, Gavin was a producer on the BBC film Hiroshima, which won an International Emmy in 2006. He has also served as a board member for both the UK Psychological Trauma Society and the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and is currently a visiting fellow at the Media School at Bournemouth University.

Lauren Walsh
Lauren Walsh

Lauren Walsh teaches at New York University, where she is the founder and director of the Gallatin Photojournalism Intensive. She is also the director of Lost Rolls America, a national archive of photography and memory, and in 2023, she was named a Fulbright Specialist in Photography and Ethics. Walsh’s newest book is Through the Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter (Routledge, 2022). Her other books include Conversations on Conflict Photography (Routledge, 2019) and Shadow of Memory (2021, co-author); and she is co-editor of The Future of Text and Image: Collected Essays on Literary and Visual Conjunctures (2012) and The Millennium Villages Project (2016), and photo editor of Macondo: Memories of the Colombian Conflict (2017). She has published widely in mainstream and academic journals and anthologies, with topics ranging from photojournalism and moral injury to documentation of war crimes to censorship.
