In this panel, we discuss how independent outlets with just a few staffers have been on the front lines of the fight against authoritarianism in the U.S., and how their business model - driven by reader support - allows them to take risks that the better-funded legacy media is not willing to take.

Julia Angwin is an award-winning investigative journalist, a bestselling author, a New York Times contributing Opinion writer and a Walter Shorenstein Media and Democracy Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy. She is the founder of Proof News, a new nonprofit journalism studio which launched in March 2024. In 2018, she founded The Markup, a nonprofit newsroom that investigates the impacts of technology on society. From 2014 to 2018, Julia was a senior reporter at the independent news organization ProPublica, where she led an investigative team that was a Finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Reporting in 2017 and won a Gerald Loeb Award in 2018. Marisa Kabas is a Brooklyn-based independent journalist, writer, and the founder of The Handbasket, a subscriber-supported news site and newsletter launched in June 2022. Originally created as a side project for personal essays, it has evolved into a full-time, independent news platform focused on investigative reporting and political analysis. Tara Palmeri is one of the most feared and fearless reporters covering power and politics. She has 15 years of experience covering national politics and foreign affairs. She was formerly a White House Correspondent for ABC News where she covered the first Trump administration. She was the chief National Correspondent for POLITICO during the Biden administration. She has been a political analyst for CNBC, CBS and CNN. She started her career as a columnist for the Washington Examiner and then went on to report for the New York Post. She was a foreign correspondent for POLITICO Europe, where she covered international affairs, including Brexit. Memo Torres is the Director of Engagement and multimedia journalist for the James Beard award-winning L.A. Taco. He is also the host of the Daily Memo and writes Where Memo Torres Eats in L.A. on Apple Maps. You can see him on Netflix’s Taco Chronicles and Pressure Cooker. You can hear him on KCRW’s Good Food occasionally. He was a finalist for the Ruben Salazar Award for Latino journalists and a former third-generation landscaper.
