Cristian Alarcon
Cristian Alarcón is a writer, journalist, and university professor born in La Unión, Chile, now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Since the 1990s, Alarcón has made a distinguished career in investigative journalism and narrative nonfiction, publishing his work in Latin America, Europe and the United States. In 2012 he founded Revista Anfibia, and still leads it, as one of the main journalism outlets in Latin America. There, he has promoted the intersection of journalism, literature, art, and performance. Based on that long term experience, he now directs the Master’s Degree in Narrative Journalism at the National University of San Martín (UNSAM).
In the academic field, he has trained generations of journalists and has been a visiting professor at universities in Latin America, Europe, and the United States. He is a mentor at the Gabo Foundation and is currently a full professor at the School of Journalism and Social Communication at the National University of La Plata. He gives lectures and workshops that weave together his journalistic practice with queer theory and performance. Eight years ago, he created the Performative Journalism Laboratory, an experimental space that brings together journalists and artists to develop performances based on in-depth research.
His non-fiction books were translated into many languages. Cuando me muera quiero que me toquen cumbia, Si me querés, quereme transa and Un mar de castillos peronistas are some of the more successful. In 2022, he was awarded with the Alfaguara Prize for his novel El tercer paraíso.
His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Samuel Chavkin Prize, the Konex Award, and the Perfil Award for Freedom of Expression. The city of La Unión named him an Illustrious Citizen in recognition of his cultural and literary contributions, and the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires declared him a Distinguished Figure of Culture last year.
