Karen Allen

Karen Allen is a former BBC News journalist and foreign correspondent with over 25 years of experience in reporting conflicts, humanitarian response, politics and economics across the BBC’s main international TV, radio and digital networks. Karen was based in Nairobi as the BBC’s East Africa Correspondent, in Johannesburg as the BBC’s Southern Africa Correspondent and in Afghanistan as the BBC’s Kabul correspondent. She has also reported extensively across Central Africa and the Horn of Africa and was one of the first journalists to be embedded with defence forces during the Iraq war in 2002 – a controversial move - which marked a global shift towards 24/7 news.

After leaving the BBC in 2019, Karen has continued to write for a number of publications, produce podcasts and be involved in bridging the gap between journalism and international public policy. She has undertaken research on information operations and the role of AI in online disinformation campaigns as well as exploring other emerging tech issues.

She holds a master’s degree in International Relations and Contemporary War and is a Visiting Fellow at King’s College, London in the Department of War Studies. She is also a researcher at the Centre for Information Integrity in Africa (CINIA) at Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

Karen is the founder and director of the consultancy firm Karen Allen International. She co-authored a study on the coverage of AI in Africa by CINIA and DW Akademie.
