Humor, personality and internet-native formats are often dismissed as incompatible with serious journalism. This workshop challenges that assumption. Using research on audience engagement and hands-on production and community-building examples from Dave Jorgenson, participants will learn how humour and narrative can improve comprehension, trust and reach — without sacrificing accuracy or civic value.
Target audience: journalists and editors who believe serious journalism must sound solemn, newsroom leaders sceptical of humour-led formats, educators and students.

In May 2019, Dave Jorgenson launched the @WashingtonPost TikTok. The channel found immediate success on TikTok and in the D.C. Twittersphere. Over six years, it grew to become the Washington Post Universe, with 1.9 million followers on TikTok and 680K on YouTube Shorts. He won eight Webby Awards for his work, including ‘Best Creator’ multiple times. He also wrote a book, Make A TikTok Every Day. In July 2025, he left the Washington Post, along with two fellow colleagues, to launch Local News International. He is now overseeing a rapidly growing audience on his own accounts on TikTok and YouTube, as well as a quickly growing newsletter that predominantly reaches young men who tell Dave that they don’t interact with the news in other ways. The New York Times wrote about his ambitions to grow a young, engaged audience through LNI Media. He’s also spoken with Kara Swisher on her podcast, and with Scott Simon on NPR’s Weekend Edition.
