Vera protagonista del romanzo è Gaza: una Gaza ferita dall'occupazione e dalla guerra, una città raccontata in tutta la sua nudità e nelle sue contraddizioni dal punto di vista di Zahra, una donna che decide di intraprendere una ricerca per scoprire se il marito Ammar è morto davvero accidentalmente durante il massacro di Shujaiya del luglio 2004 o se in realtà è stato assassinato. E in questo viaggio pieno di avventure il lettore stesso si trova a girare per le strade di Gaza, dentro i caffè e i locali, sente gli odori, assapora i cibi e percepisce le sensazioni. Il romanzo è un ritratto vivo della città con varie tematiche: dai rifugiati, alle differenze di classe sociali, alle frontiere e i valichi, alla distruzione del paesaggio, agli insediamenti, ai campi profughi, al commercio illegale di droga, ai capi della resistenza dotati di carisma e di poteri, ai rapporti tra uomini e donne e tra generazioni, alle differenze tra la zona rurale e la città.
