Possono le intelligenza artificiali sviluppare una vera coscienza? Da questa provocatoria domanda parte un viaggio che ci porta dalle sfide iniziali dell’Intelligenza Artificiale, come il celebre test di Turing, fino alle frontiere più avanzate della coscienza artificiale. Ripercorreremo alcune tappe fondamentali di questa evoluzione, partendo dall’ipotesi del sistema di simboli fisico per poi confrontarci con il famoso esperimento mentale della stanza cinese di Searle. L’ avvento delle reti neurali ha rivoluzionato il panorama, spostando il focus dal ragionamento simbolico all’apprendimento basato sui dati, mentre la robotica ha introdotto il concetto di embodiment, per cui la coscienza non è solo computazione, ma emerge dall’interazione fisica con l’ambiente e con gli altri esseri coscienti. Esploreremo quindi alcune delle teorie più attuali sulla coscienza naturale e artificiale. Il viaggio si concluderà con uno sguardo ai progetti del RoboticsLab dell’Università di Palermo, dove si studiano robot che sviluppano forme primitive di autocoscienza.
