From South Africa, to Indonesia, to Pakistan, 2024 will be a year of pivotal elections that will have global ramifications for democracy. Extra attention will be paid to two elections in particular as they’re being held in two of the world’s largest democracies, where the press freedom environment and journalist safety situation continues to evolve and decline: India and the United States.
In this in-depth conversation between journalists and editors who will be covering both the upcoming Indian election (April 2024) and U.S. election (November 2024), we will discuss what local and international newsrooms are doing to prepare and protect their staff and freelancers during these pivotal news events; tips for journalists covering elections globally, which are always fraught and risky times for the press; and challenges that arise between local and international newsrooms. We will focus on journalist safety and the experience of reporting locally and internationally in two countries that continue to pose different types of dangers for the journalists who cover them. Lih Yi Beh
Lih Yi Beh is the Asia Program Coordinator of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). She manages a team of researchers documenting press freedom violations and leads CPJ's research and advocacy in the region. Lih has reported from different countries in Asia since 2002, with a focus on human rights and social justice issues. She started her career at the award-winning independent Malaysian news website, Malaysiakini, before going on to work for international news outlets Agence France-Presse (AFP) and the Thomson Reuters Foundation in Hong Kong, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. Her work has also been published by the Guardian and the South China Morning Post. Her journalism work has been shortlisted for SOPA and GLAAD Awards. Lih speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay, Indonesian and English.

Shahina K.K. is a veteran Indian journalist who has worked across print and broadcast media to shed light on issues such as gender, human rights, and marginalized communities, along with the injustices they face. Currently a senior editor for Outlook magazine, she was one of the first journalists in India to be charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA, a draconian anti-terror law extensively weaponized against journalists in the country for over a decade. She has continued her reporting in various posts despite awaiting trial for a case opened in 2010, when local government officials in Karnataka state sought to criminalize her reporting published in Tehelka, a prominent investigative magazine where she worked at the time. Her report cast doubt on a police investigation into 2008 bomb blasts in Bengaluru, alleging that the police had fabricated witness statements to arrest a local Muslim cleric. Julie Pace is Senior Vice President and Executive Editor of The Associated Press, leading global news coverage from more than 100 countries. Since Pace assumed the role in 2021, AP has significantly expanded its digital news offerings, been awarded two Pulitzer Prizes, and produced an award-winning documentary on the Ukraine war that was nominated for both an Academy Award and the BAFTAs. Previously, Pace was Washington Bureau Chief for AP, directing AP’s coverage of the presidency, politics and the U.S. government. Before that, Pace was AP’s White House Correspondent, contributing aggressive news reporting and sharp analysis to the AP news report.
