Attraverso una galleria di figure minori della letteratura e della filosofia – dalla Lady Bertram tratteggiata da Jane Austen all’Oblomov di Gončarov –, Filippo La Porta costruisce in queste pagine una controstoria dell’eroismo umano, mettendo in luce una forma alternativa di grandezza. La sua è una presa di distanza dall’onnipresente esaltazione dell’unicità, del vitalismo e del superamento dei limiti che vuole celebrare la possibilità di un’esistenza lontana dai riflettori, vissuta senza voler raggiungere nessun primato, testimoniando anzi come la routine, l’inazione e la marginalità possano essere luoghi di pienezza e autenticità. Alternando i ricordi personali alle idee di pensatori quali Arendt e Camus, Orwell e Brancati, La Porta restituisce dignità alla fragilità e alla semplicità, in un mondo che tende a giudicare le persone soltanto in base al consenso sociale ottenuto e alla capacità di raccontare i propri risultati. Elogio della vita ordinaria ci mostra invece come il vero eroismo oggi non risieda nel farsi notare, ma nel restare fedeli a se stessi; non nel superarsi, ma nel saper semplicemente «essere». Perché – come scriveva Pirandello – «è molto più facile essere eroi che galantuomini. Eroe si può essere una volta tanto, galantuomo bisogna esserlo sempre».
