From device searches, data seizures and interrogations to visa issues and digital surveillance, crossing borders has become an increasingly fraught experience for journalists. Those working on sensitive topics, from conflict and corruption to migration and extremism, face growing safety challenges when traveling internationally.
This practical workshop helps journalists and editors prepare for border crossings. We will cover pre-travel risk assessment, protecting devices, data and contacts, understanding your rights, and how to handle questioning and support colleagues who may be at higher risk. Through real-world scenarios and expert guidance, participants will leave with concrete tools, checklists and strategies to travel more confidently, and to better protect their reporting, their sources and themselves.
Kindly note that the Centro Alessi has two entrances, one in Via Mazzini and one in Via Danzetta (parallel streets). The entrance for this workshop is in Via Mazzini.
This workshop forms part of the 3-day festival Safety Hub situated in the Centro Alessi.
Organised in association with ACOS Alliance.
