Conferences can be overwhelming if you are more on the introvert side. Lots of people, big group gatherings, aperitivo meetings everywhere. But there are ways to navigate. It’s not about being anti-social (introverts aren’t!), it’s about knowing your boundaries and making Perugia your own wonderful experience. Here is your survival guide – created by colleagues who know what they are talking about.

Steffi Dobmeier
Steffi Dobmeier is head of digital and editorial development and member of the chief editorial team at STERN based in Hamburg, Germany. She works at the interface between editorial and product leading the magazine’s digital product development from the editorial side. She was responsible for the magazine’s website and app relaunch last year. Before joining STERN in July 2023, Steffi worked with different regional and national news organizations. She was deputy editor-in-chief and later head of digital product at Schwäbische Zeitung and managing editor and member of the chief editorial team at FUNKE Media Group. She also worked for ZEIT ONLINE as well as taz.
Ellen Heinrichs
Ellen Heinrichs is the founder and CEO of the Bonn Institute. She has more than twenty years of experience as an innovation leader, journalist, speaker and communications expert for various media companies and international non-profit organizations. Prior to founding the Bonn Institute, she was Head of Knowledge Transfer and Innovation at the German foreign broadcaster DW. Throughout her career, Ellen has been particularly interested in how journalism must change to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. In response to increasing news avoidance and declining trust in journalism, the nonprofit Bonn Institute has therefore made it its mission to make journalism more human-friendly, diverse and audience-engaging. The Bonn Institute works with a wide range of private, public and nonprofit media organizations, offering journalists workshops and networking opportunities, as well as advising media managers looking for a constructive compass. Shirish Kulkarni
Shirish Kulkarni is an award-winning journalist, researcher and community organiser, with 25 years’ experience working in all the UK’s major broadcast newsrooms. He now works across a range of innovation, inclusion and arts projects, with a focus on new forms of storytelling, community engagement and responsible use of technology - all with the aim of shifting power to build more reflective and inclusive journalism systems.
Adam Thomas
Adam Thomas is the founder of Evenly Distributed, which supports journalists, nonprofit leaders, fundraisers, and social entrepreneurs in building purpose-driven organisations. Through coaching, courses, and consultancy, Adam has worked with organisations like Report for the World, The Examination, Correctiv, Lighthouse Reports, IRPI, and Reporters Shield to redesign their missions, fundraising strategies, and operations. In 2024, he launched Fundraising HQ, Funder Match, and Theory of Change (a newsletter for social entrepreneurs). Previously, as Executive Director of the European Journalism Centre, Adam spearheaded a rebrand and new strategic direction for the Centre, delivering over €20m in funding through initiatives like the Engaged Journalism Accelerator, the Journalism Funders Forum, the News Impact series, and the $3m European Journalism COVID-19 Support Fund. Adam was also Chief Product Officer at Storyful, the world’s first social media news agency. He oversaw 20+ journalism products and key partnerships with Facebook, YouTube, and Google. During his time, Storyful grew from 16 to 120 staff and was acquired by News Corp in 2013.
