Il ‘Patto Atlantico’ è il Santo Graal dell’Occidente. I soci fondatori condividevano un tratto comune: usurpavano, o avevano appena perso un dominio coloniale. Ma alla metà del Novecento, quando nacque la NATO, il mondo colonizzato era in rivolta. Non era facile riproporre il vecchio predominio senza cambiare il linguaggio. Ripulito il linguaggio, l’Occidente poté dare avvio al sanguinoso sforzo di ri-colonizzare i continenti che stava perdendo. Per guerreggiare unito, l’Occidente ha bisogno di un ‘nemico’. Sulla carta geografica il ‘nemico’ ogni tanto cambia posto e lo stesso Occidente a sua volta si sposta: fino al paradosso, quando ‘nemico’ è un pezzo dello stesso Occidente. La metafora del ‘porcospino d’acciaio’, cara al vertice della UE, ci prospetta un apocalittico finale di partita: tetro lascito della ‘civiltà occidentale’.
