The collapse of USAID’s funding for journalism wasn’t the end; it was the catalyst.
Around the world, media outlets are facing a difficult landscape: there is less philanthropic support, fierce competition for (EU) grants, and a retreat from funding for climate and democracy. Support from the tech sector has nearly vanished, and many local broadcasters across Europe and the US struggle. Major institutions and journalism support programmes have shut down or withdrawn.
But amid the wreckage, a new funding landscape is emerging. Philanthropy is being reimagined, with pooled funds offering promising alternatives. Journalists and intermediaries are shifting narratives, forging cross-sector alliances, joining forces and experimenting with new storytelling and revenue models. It's no longer just about “saving journalism”; it's about supporting resilient information ecosystems. But will this transformation happen quickly enough, and what disruptions will it trigger?
This fishbowl-style session will honestly examine what has been lost, while also showcasing practical, replicable strategies from those adapting to this new reality:
> Who’s still funding journalism, or why not?
> What is the role of intermediaries?
> How are pooled funds, public–private models and new coalitions reshaping the sector?
Expect provocations, practical insights, and space for collaborative exchange.
Moderated by Lars Boering.
Organised in association with the European Journalism Centre.
