Journalism in 2026 comes with increased and growing risks, from online attacks and surveillance, to escalating legal pressures, newsroom burnout and new and ever-changing threats in the field. Safety is no longer optional; it’s essential. How can this year’s festival help editors and journalists build their safety knowledge, skills and resilience?
This session offers tips for good everyday practices, and introduces the workshops, meet-ups and activities taking place at the first-ever festival Safety Hub (in the Centro Alessi) over the next three days.

Elisabet Cantenys

Elisabet Cantenys is the Executive Director of the ACOS Alliance, a coalition of more than 125 news organizations, freelance journalist associations and press freedom NGOs working together to champion safe and responsible journalistic practices. Elisabet has led the Alliance since 2016, managing the organisation’s growth and strategy, overseeing its global partnerships and leading a rich programme of activities. Prior to joining the ACOS Alliance Elisabet had more than a decade of experience working on freelance safety issues and cultivating a collaborative approach to these. As former Head of Programmes at the Rory Peck Trust, in London, she oversaw, managed and implemented more than a dozen journalist safety projects worldwide. Cantenys has also worked as a freelance documentary producer, radio journalist and writer in New York, London and Barcelona. Finbarr O'Reilly
Finbarr O'Reilly

Finbarr O’Reilly has spent the last 20 years as an award-winning visual journalist and author working in conflict zones and complex humanitarian emergencies. He is a regular contributor to The New York Times and was the Laureate of the 2020 Carmignac Photojournalism Award, which resulted in a two-year project, two books, and multiple exhibitions about the Democratic Republic of Congo. Finbarr has also produced exhibitions for the Nobel Peace Prize and the International Criminal Court. His focus in recent years has been on leading collaborative multi-platform projects that develop and promote a more representative range of voices and perspectives in the photojournalism industry while translating strategic and editorial objectives into engaging and compelling narratives that influence global audiences. Finbarr is a Canon photographer and has held fellowships at Yale, Harvard, and Columbia universities and has won numerous awards, including World Press Photo of the Year, a Peabody Award, and an Emmy for Outstanding Video Journalism. He was the winner of the 2023 James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting and is the co-author of the 2017 memoir Shooting Ghosts: A U.S. Marine, a Combat Photographer, and Their Journey Back from War (Penguin-Random House).

Lucy Westcott
Lucy Westcott

Lucy Westcott is Chief Emergencies Officer of the Committee to Protect Journalists. She oversees CPJ’s assistance and safety work worldwide. Westcott joined CPJ in 2018 as the James W. Foley Fellow. During her fellowship, she focused on safety issues for women journalists in non-hostile environments and assisted with the creation of safety resources for journalists globally. In 2021, she played a prominent role in CPJ’s response to the Afghan crisis, including helping Afghan journalists and their families evacuate to Qatar. Prior to joining CPJ, Westcott was a staff writer for Newsweek, where she covered gender and immigration. She has reported for outlets including The Intercept, Bustle, The Atlantic, and Women Under Siege, and was a United Nations correspondent for the Inter Press Service. As a fellow with the International Reporting Project in 2016, Westcott wrote about gender and development in South Africa and Lesotho. She has reported from Egypt, Jordan, Cameroon, and the U.S. She has a master’s in multi-platform journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.
