This conference will highlight how, between the 17th and 18th centuries, religion had a direct impact on witchcraft trials in the Habsburg Empire. The various traditions—Catholic, Protestant, and local—influenced not only the accusations but also the very way witchcraft was judged and interpreted, especially in Croatian and Hungarian regions. A key role emerges for the clergy, sermons, and religious instruction, which helped shape popular beliefs and reinforce the idea of witchcraft as a profoundly religious offense. All of this takes place within the context of the relationship between state and church: religion does not appear as a passive backdrop, but as a determining force in the dynamics of persecution.
