La notte di venerdì 9 gennaio 1693 una scossa di terremoto fa tremare l’intera Val di Noto in Sicilia. Crollano case, si conta qualche morto. Il terrore di un sisma più violento, tuttavia, attanaglia la popolazione. La domenica successiva, la gente di Ibla si raduna in chiesa per ringraziare Dio dello scampato pericolo. È proprio allora che il furore della terra si leva distruggendo quasi interamente la valle. Si diffonde ben presto l’idea che quell’evento così funesto, durato «il tempo di un miserere», sia l’effetto di un castigo di Dio. Ovunque si cumulano macerie, rimane in piedi solo la Chiesa dell’Itria, intorno a cui gravitano le perdute anime del quartiere degli «Archi», sotto la guida del discusso padre Bernardo, secondogenito del marchese Arestia Corbara. Come spesso avviene nei momenti bui, è più facile accusare e puntare il dito contro altri che esaminare la propria coscienza. Così denunce, ammonizioni e delazioni si moltiplicano con il dilagare della superstizione. Ma Bernardo, che agisce fuori degli schemi usuali dell’oscurantismo religioso, diventa promotore di una rinascita spirituale che si manifesta a partire dalla forza propulsiva dell’Arte.
