In the name of freedom of speech, Big Tech—especially META and other social media platforms—appears increasingly inclined to amplify polarisation, often at the expense of marginalised voices. While these platforms claim to foster public conversation, their algorithms and business models frequently prioritise sensationalism, clickbait, and divisive content, overshadowing and silencing underrepresented communities. This panel will discusse the complex relationship between digital platforms, freedom of expression, and the survival of diversity in media and public discourse. How can we ensure that the voices of the oppressed are not drowned out in a sea of polarisation? Why diversity became a dirty word? What role can journalists and media organisations play in promoting inclusive narratives in an era dominated by algorithmic curation? Join us for an open discussion on the challenges and opportunities for diversity in the evolving media landscape.

Milica Pesic
Milica Pesic is the Executive Director of Media Diversity Institute (MDI). She has been working in Diversity and the Media field for more than 20 years designing and supervising multi-national, multi-annual programmes in Europe, NIS, MENA, South Asia, the Sahel, Sub-Sahara, West Africa, China and Cuba. She has co-designed an MA Course in Diversity and the Media which is jointly run by the MDI and University of Westminster. A Journalist by profession, she has reported for the BBC, Radio Free Europe, the Times HES, TV Serbia and other media. She holds an MA in International Journalism from City University, London. Prior to MDI, she had worked for New York University, the IFJ (Brussels) and the Alternative Information Network (Paris). MDI has branches in the US, Western Balkans, Belgium and South Caucasus.
Verica Rupar
Verica Rupar is Professor of Journalism at Auckland University of Technology, School of Communication Studies, New Zealand. Previously, she worked at Cardiff University. She has also been an Academic Advisor to Media Diversity Institute since 2012. Verica has written on media, politics and journalism in historical and comparative contexts. Her publications include Journalism: Themes and Critical Debates (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2017), Getting the facts right: Reporting Ethnicity and religion (MDI/IFJ, 2012), Scooped: Politics and power of journalism in Aotearoa New Zealand (AUT Media 2012), Journalism and meaning-making (Hampton Press, 2010). She has worked previously as a journalist in several countries. She is a past Chair of the World Journalism Education Council (2019-2023).
Miazia Schueler
Miazia Schueler is a researcher at AI Forensics, with a focus on digital methods and algorithmic injustices. Using qualitative and quantitative audits, she examines racial and gendered discrimination through a decolonial Black feminist lens. Contributing to algorithmic scrutiny and platform accountability, she navigates the intersection of tech, society, and justice. She holds a Research Master’s in New Media and Digital Culture from the University of Amsterdam.
