“Subito impazzirai d’amore per il sapere e subito nelle piazze, tessendo pensieri vincenti, con sfoggio di eloquenza ne riporterai gloria senza fine”: così scrive negli ultimi anni del Quattrocento un copista famoso, Marco Musuro, studioso e poeta greco in Occidente. Se da un lato il pensiero della folla suscita repulsione per il volgo profano (come diceva Orazio), dall’altro la piazza esercita un fascino sul sapiente in cerca di pubblico. Significative testimonianze dal tempo dell’imperatore Costantino il grande e dei suoi eredi (IV-V sec. d.C.) consentono di cogliere la cifra del dinamismo di andata e ritorno dell’oratore in piazza, un fenomeno ‘magnetico’ tutt’altro che passato. Pia Carolla è professoressa associata di Civiltà bizantina presso il Dipartimento di Italianistica, Romanistica, Antichistica, Arti e Spettacolo (DIRAAS) dell’Università di Genova dal 2021. Indaga testi manoscritti greci, studia la storiografia tra V e X secolo d.C. e il rapporto tra diplomazia e letteratura in epoca bizantina, senza trascurare la ricezione dell’antico. Le sue principali pubblicazioni sono uscite presso de Gruyter (2008 e 2019 nella Bibliotheca Teubneriana), nelle riviste italiane Maia (2021), Codex (2021), Nea Rhomi (2019), Mediterraneo Antico (2018, 2013, 2010) e nei periodici esteri Eunomia (2024) e Estudios bizantinos (2022). Dirige la collana “Testi dell’Oriente greco tardoantico e bizantino” per Genova University Press (GUP).
