Mobile journalism educators Rob Layton and Aphrodite Salas will guide your smartphone walk through the historic streets of Perugia for narrative mobile videography, with an emphasis on storytelling through composition, light, and local character. The workshop begins in Hotel Brufani with foundational instruction on how to get the most out of your smartphone for videos. Participants return to Brufani after the walk to edit your videos into narrative video montages with instructor guidance and shared among participants for feedback. Limited to 35 participants. Workshop Schedule:
06:00 – Briefing at Hotel Brufani. A 20-minute instructional session covering key techniques:
> Composition: Rule of thirds, leading lines, framing, focal choices
> Lighting: Making the most of golden hour and manual exposure adjustments
> Smartphone camera tips: Focus/exposure lock, burst mode, creative angles
> Practical examples and inspiration from previous walks
> Overview of recording and editing apps you will use (participants must download the Instagram Edits app prior to the workshop and have an Instagram account)
06:25 – Sunrise: walk begins. Participants will explore Perugia’s cobblestone streets and architectural beauty in the soft morning light. Sunrise is 6.27am.
07:15 – Return to Hotel Brufani. The group reconvenes to begin editing their videos and sharing insights. A QR code will be provided for participants to upload and exchange final works.
What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, fully-charged smartphone.

Rob Layton

Rob Layton is an Assistant Professor of Mobile Journalism at Bond University on the Gold Coast, Australia. His expertise has led him to work with and be published by Apple, Google, News Corp, and the ABC, among others. He was a career journalist before becoming a full-time journalism educator. He has trained journalists and producers in mobile journalism globally, including for the Australian national broadcaster’s flagship programs, as well as at Al Jazeera and News Corp. His mobile-made short documentaries have been awarded and screened in cinemas and events globally, including the United Nations Ocean Conference in Portugal, NAB in Las Vegas for the Mojo Awards, Melbourne Documentary Film Festival, Global Short Film Awards Cannes, Florida Surf Film Awards, and the San Diego Undersea Film Exhibit. Aphrodite Salas
Aphrodite Salas

Aphrodite Salas is a journalist and professor at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, where her research focuses on mobile journalism, collaborative journalism with Indigenous communities and more specifically, the decolonization of journalism education. Her most recent work created exclusively with mobile journalism is called Arctic Shift to Clean Energy. The multimedia project shares a story of Inuit climate leadership and was screened alongside Indigenous partners at the UN Climate Conference COP 27 and the UN Biodiversity Conference COP 15. Aphrodite is also part of the management team of a multi-year, 123-million dollar research project called Electrifying Society at Concordia University, where she works in a leadership role related to stakeholder engagement and public policy.
