Two brutal conflicts - one in Gaza, another in Ukraine - have claimed tens of thousands of civilian lives, killed scores of journalists and dominated global headlines for months. But what happens when media coverage of armed conflict fails to offer an intentional feminist perspective? How do we ensure women’s voices are heard? And how can we see them not just as victims of war but also as key players in any form of conflict resolution - especially when peace seems so elusive?
Annette Young, the host and creator of The 51 Percent - a global feminist magazine programme celebrating its 10th anniversary this year - brings together female peace activists and correspondents from the Middle East to put gender back on the conflict reporting agenda.

Yael Braudo-Bahat
Yael Braudo-Bahat is one of the two co-directors of Women Wage Peace (WWP), responsible for resource development, cultivating and maintaining relations with organizations and supporters in Israel and abroad, and supervising WWP activity on mainstream and social media. She also works closely with the founders, director, and coordinators of Women of the Sun, WWP’s Palestinian sister movement. Braudo-Bahat obtained her Ph.D. in Law from Tel Aviv University, where she also served as a lecturer, research assistant, and Associate Editor of the international legal journal Theoretical Inquiries in Law. WWP is the largest peace movement in Israel calling to reach a bilaterally acceptable political agreement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in part by increasing the number of women in all aspects of negotiation. Mélina Huet
Mélina Huet is a French correspondent and filmmaker. Self-taught, Mélina began to film and direct her own projects. A former France 24 Madrid correspondent, she has been covering the conflict in Ukraine for France 24 and also the French network LCI since 2022. More recently, she has been reporting on the Israel-Hamas war along with the consequences for the West Bank. She has also reported for other French and Belgian networks including TF1, RTL-TVI and France Télévisions. In 2020, her first documentary Protect the living, Honour the Dead about ending violence against women in France was first broadcast on France 24. It was selected by several international festivals, including FIGRA (France) and Toronto International Women Film Festival, and awarded multiple prizes, including Best documentary at the San Francisco Arthouse Short Festival. Mélina is a graduate of Sciences Po Aix and the Centre de formation des journalistes.
Nivine Sandouka
Nivine Sandouka is the Regional Chief of Staff with the Alliance for Middle East Peace (ALLMEP) . She is leading in the field of peace programming, and gender mainstreaming. Previously, she worked with the German Association for Development Cooperation – AGIAMONDO, as well as Oxfam GB, CARE International, IPCRI, and the Regional Organization for Peace Economics and Security – ROPES. She also runs an online-based initiative called ‘Judi- from me to you’ that aims to connect women together and volunteers in several civil society organizations. To pursue her passion she is the Board Director of a newly established NGO called ‘Our Rights- Hoqoqona’ in Jerusalem, focusing on the civic and political rights of Palestinians in East Jerusalem, especially women. In addition, she currently sits as a board member for ‘The Jerusalem Center for Women’. Annette Young
Annette Young is a senior journalist and news presenter for France 24 Television. Originally from Australia, Annette has reported from parts of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. She also is the creator and host of The 51 Percent, an award-winning program about the women reshaping our world which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. In an extensive career, she has worked for the Melbourne Age, the Sydney Morning Herald and SBS Television Australia as a reporter, producer and in newsroom management. While based in the Middle East, she became a Jerusalem correspondent for France 24. In 2015, she was named by UN Women as one of the 20 inspirational global voices on women in the media and was awarded the gold medal in broadcast journalism for the Ricardo Ortega prize in 2018. In 2023, Annette was selected as a 'Game Changer' and a social impact finalist in the Global Australian Awards in recognition of her contribution to the field of gender journalism.
