La stampa a caratteri mobili viene inventata in Germania, ma si sviluppa in Italia, in particolare a Venezia, la città che nel Cinquecento diventa l’indiscussa capitale dell’editoria. A Venezia si pubblicavano la metà delle edizioni europee e i tre quarti di quelle italiane. A Venezia si sono stampati il primo libro greco della storia (1486), il primo libro armeno (1512), la prima Bibbia in volgare italiano (1471), il primo Talmud (1520), il primo Corano in arabo (1538), il primo libro di medicina illustrato (1494) e il primo libro pornografico (1527).
