Dal primo giorno nella storia in cui hanno allattato un bambino le donne hanno sempre avuto una funzione fondamentale nel nutrire gli altri. Passando da impastare il pane a preparare i formaggi o la salse da vendere in strada, da raccogliere le erbe selvatiche a conservare gli alimenti, da preparare i pranzi di famiglia a vendere pollame o ortaggi, da allattare il proprio figlio a nutrire quello altrui… schiere di padrone di casa, balie, ambulanti, contadine, pollaiole, balie animano le cucine, i campi e le strade dell’Italia medievale.
