Quella volta che, a Cortina 1956, il pubblico lanciò arance sul ghiaccio dello Stadio per protestare contro il voto troppo basso attribuito a una coppia di pattinatori tedeschi, e Robert Paul che anni dopo confessa: “per poterci esibire alle Olimpiadi dovemmo aspettare che ripulissero la pista dalle arance”. La piscina di Tokyo ‘64 disegnata da Kenzo Tange che il tuffatore sudtirolese Klaus Dibiasi giovanissimo, da Bolzano, si ferma a guardare con gli altri atleti, naso all’insù, per venti minuti. Ma anche l’impegno per i diritti civili di Donna De Varona, la maschera di hockey di Florence Schelling, felice di battere i fratelli maschi, le acrobazie di Tenley Albright, lo slittino di Armin Zoeggeler, le ali dell’aquila che il nativo americano Billy Mills vede mentre vince l’oro, ricordando il suo papà, Pita Taufatofua, portabandiera di Tonga da Rio a Pyeongchang, e Picabo Street che dopo una discesa in pista guarda l’obiettivo e dice: “ama ciò che fai. Il successo sarà inevitabile”. Sono solo alcune delle tantissime storie raccontate in “Words of Olympians”, la serie unica realizzata dal Museo Olimpico e da Una Montagna di Libri per i Giochi Olimpici e Paralimpici di Milano Cortina 2026, che raccoglie le voci degli olimpionici di ieri e di oggi. Con gli ideatori della serie vi raccontiamo alcune di queste storie, alla ricerca dello spirito dei Giochi, col fiato sospeso per tanta bellezza, audacia, passione. Perché, come ci ha detto Niccolò Campriani, “abbiamo una sola vita, e se la viviamo nella paura non ci sarà una seconda occasione”.
