Voce tra le più significative della letteratura sudamericana, ha raggiunto la notorietà con i romanzi realistici La ciudad y los perros (1963; trad. it. 1967) e La casa verde (1966; trad. it. 1970), mentre i suoi romanzi successivi sono caratterizzati da registri narrativi meno crudi e da varietà di temi (Pantaleón y las visitadoras, 1973, trad. it. 1975; La tía Julia y el escribidor, 1977, trad. it. 1979; El paraíso en la otra esquina, 2003, trad. it. 2003). Nel 2010 gli è stato conferito il Premio Nobel per la letteratura “per la sua cartografia delle strutture del potere e per le acute immagini della resistenza, rivolta e sconfitta dell’individuo”.
