Nicole Avery Nichols is editor and VP of the Detroit Free Press, Michigan’s largest newspaper. Nichols joined the Free Press as a features writer more than two decades ago. While rising through the editing ranks, she has coordinated coverage of the coronavirus pandemic, the #MeToo movement, the opioid crisis, the racial unrest following the murder of George Floyd, and much more. From the start of her career as a weekend reporter at the Observer-Dispatch in Utica, N.Y., Nichols has been a champion of stories that center people. More than 30 years in, and she’s still determined to amplify the voices of those who have historically been forced to whisper.
