Il vescovo di Siviglia ha avuto talvolta casualmente, talaltra volontariamente la funzione quasi di “ponte”tra due mondi culturali così diversi tra loro, quello cosiddetto pagano e quello del nuovo messaggio cristiano. Personalità complessa e interessante, significativa per la ricerca delle origini del proprio mondo, ha dedicato tutta la vita al servizio della chiesa e qualche volta a quello della monarchia visigotica, nel turbinoso tempo dell’Età Media. Nell’animo profondamente cristiano di Isidoro di Siviglia, si fonde la migliore cultura e spiritualità classica in una commistione continua e intensa di grande modernità.
Sintesi delle più antiche tradizioni vediche e iraniche, la religione del profeta Zoroastro postula l’ineludibile esistenza del Bene e del Male da cui discende il conflitto cosmico che investe l’intero universo. Da tale profonda e problematica spiritualità, che trova espressione nella mitologia della creazione come nelle figure di angeli e demoni, scaturisce il tema del libero arbitrio. La visione escatologica zoroastriana prefigura, nella sua novità storica, speculazioni ed esiti delle grandi religioni del mondo antico, in una linea di continuità che giunge sino al cristianesimo medievale.
