Many news organisations do not lack good ideas. What is far more challenging is turning them into meaningful, tangible results that support sustainability. Progress comes from how well you set direction, bring people along, and translate intentions into outcomes that others can see and trust.
This session focuses on what helps initiatives move forward no matter where you sit inside a news organisation. We will look at how to align the right people, choose what is worth doing, test ideas with purpose, and keep momentum when competing demands creep in. The focus is practical and honest, with tactics you can use even when time and capacity are tight. Or rather: especially when!
Participants will leave with simple tools for setting priorities, communicating clearly, and creating conditions where ideas turn into outcomes that strengthen sustainability. No product title required, just a commitment to approaching progress with curiosity, intention, and follow through.

Kim Bode

Kim Bode is a former business journalist turned news product strategist. She leads Newspack’s Revenue Development Program, which helps publishers fully leverage the platform to achieve their business goals. Before that, she oversaw the development of audience and reader revenue tools as at Newspack. Her career spans roles in product and audience strategy at organizations like the Los Angeles Times, where she led off-platform products such as newsletters and podcasts, and Devex, where she directed audience and product teams. Kim also works as a consultant and coach, focusing on newsletter strategy, community engagement, and revenue growth. She has collaborated with organizations worldwide, including the Media Development Investment Fund, Deutsche Welle Akademie, Human Rights Watch, Radio Free Europe, the New York Times, and the BBC. Originally from Berlin, Germany, Kim began her career reporting for news outlets like Reuters, Der Spiegel, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Financial Times Deutschland, NZZ, and Die Zeit.

Sanne Breimer
Sanne Breimer

Sanne Breimer is the founder of Inclusive Journalism, aiming to educate journalists and storytellers about positionality, media representation, and solutions journalism through a weekly newsletter, online courses and in-person retreats. She is an independent (project) manager, adviser and journalism trainer for international media organizations, including SembraMedia, Thibi, and Solutions Insights Lab (SIL). Sanne works remotely and divides her time between Europe and SouthEast Asia. Before moving into training, she worked at a managerial level in national public broadcasting in the Netherlands for almost 13 years, focusing on radio, digital media and innovation. She is Dutch with Frisian roots.

Amruta Byatnal

Amruta Byatnal is an independent journalist and editor based in London, specializing in investigations, partnerships, and global editorial strategy. With over 15 years of experience, she has led international newsrooms, shaped coverage of complex global issues, and produced high-impact journalism across text, video, and newsletters. She was most recently Asia Editor at the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s Context newsroom, where she led coverage on global inequality, climate change, and technology. Previously, as Inclusive Economies Editor, she helped define the newsroom’s approach to reporting on inequality in its many forms. Before joining Context, Amruta was a senior editor at Devex, where she led Asia Pacific and global health coverage and reported on foreign aid, gender, and human rights. She has also worked at News Deeply in New York, where she co-founded Malnutrition Deeply, and began her career at The Hindu in India. Amruta has reported from India, Japan, Morocco, Switzerland, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States. Her work has appeared in National Geographic, Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, and others. She holds a master’s degree in journalism from the Asian College of Journalism and a Master of Public Administration from Cornell University.

Michaël Jarjour is a journalist-turned-product-leader with 10+ years of experience in legacy organizations and startups, a deep passion for journalism, and tons of optimism about its future. Michaël currently works in Product Operations at The Financial Times.

Mayuri Mei Lin
Mayuri Mei Lin

As Program Director for Southeast Asia for the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF), Mayuri Mei Lin helps in shaping the organization’s regional strategy and overseeing relationships with investment clients across the region. In this role she facilitates technical assistance, drives pipeline investments and works closely with MDIF’s investment and advisory teams to help independent media strengthen their operations and achieve long term sustainability. She brings over a decade of experience in journalism, from editorial and visual storytelling to product development and audience growth. Previously, as Senior Program Officer for Asia, Mayuri coordinated Amplify Asia, MDIF’s business capacity-building program supporting independent media in Southeast Asia. Her previous experiences include coordinating international media training programs at the City University of New York and leading the BBC World Service’s East Asia Visual Journalism hub, producing digital storytelling projects across the region. She holds a Master’s degree from New York University in journalism and digital innovation and is passionate about making news more sustainable, inclusive and accessible.
