Amruta Byatnal is an independent journalist and editor based in London, specializing in investigations, partnerships, and global editorial strategy. With over 15 years of experience, she has led international newsrooms, shaped coverage of complex global issues, and produced high-impact journalism across text, video, and newsletters.
She was most recently Asia Editor at the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s Context newsroom, where she led coverage on global inequality, climate change, and technology. Previously, as Inclusive Economies Editor, she helped define the newsroom’s approach to reporting on inequality in its many forms.
Before joining Context, Amruta was a senior editor at Devex, where she led Asia Pacific and global health coverage and reported on foreign aid, gender, and human rights. She has also worked at News Deeply in New York, where she co-founded Malnutrition Deeply, and began her career at The Hindu in India.
Amruta has reported from India, Japan, Morocco, Switzerland, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States. Her work has appeared in National Geographic, Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, and others.
She holds a master’s degree in journalism from the Asian College of Journalism and a Master of Public Administration from Cornell University.
